[Our Own Correspondent.!. High Tides. Port of Westport: a.m. p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 01.24 01.40 WESTPORT', Dec. 16. The Kaimiro sailed yesterday for Auckland. The Totara from Wellington, loads for Tokomaru Bay. The Kiwitea from Greymouth, completes loading for Auckland. The Kakapo from Wellington, loads for Wellington to-morrow. The Korowai, from Wellington, will load for Auckland. Mr. C. Junker arrived from Wellington yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Woodford of Granity, have received word from the Minister of Defence that Pte. Frank Woodford is believed killed in action on November 28.
Mr. W. Nees and Mrs. Nees were passengers from Wellington by yesterday’s ’plane. l Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Hart, Stout Street, arrived yesterday from Hamilton.
Mr. G. Cumming left yesterday bj ’plane for the North Island. Mrs. J. D. Pammant left for Otira bv rail-car yesterday. Mr. C. Bignell returned from Lyttelton yesterday. Mr J. M. Robertson, Chairman of the Buller District Patriotic Committee, acknowledges the sum of 5s from “Anonymous Locket’’ for 1943 apneal.
At the meeting of the General Committee of the A. and P. Association, the secretary reported receipt of donations from the Borough Council, and Buller Valley Dairy Coy. A motion of thanks was recorded. In connection with the publican’s booth, it was decided that a temporary booth be erected and that tenders, closing on January 11, be called for the privilege. The secretary was instructed to communicate with Messrs Kyle (Christchurch) and F. E. Martyn (Rangiora) in reference to the judging of the horse and cattle sections. Mr. F. W .Thomson was appointed judge of the vegetable section. As-Mr, O’Dea was not able to devote the same time and attention to the organising of the sideshows, as he had done it was decided to ask Mr. Tebay to assist and Mr. Fenn was appointed to confer with Messrs Tebav and Woodward and given power to make preliminary arrangements and report to the next meeting. The Horse Committee reported having met Messrs W. Roche and H. Bennett representing the Buller Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, in reference to trotting events for People’s Day. It was suggested that both institutions contribute £2O towards the prizemoney for three events. At the conclusion of the meeting the Chairman Mr. Lowe, extended to the members best wishes for a happv Christmas and New Year.
At the break-up ceremony held at the South School, yesterday. Mrs. T. Mathewson, .in the unavoidable absence of the Chairman, presided and complimented the staff and pupils on a very successful year’s work. The Mavor, Mr. J. M. Robertson, presented the certificates to the successful pupils. The swimming certificates were presented bv Mr..Keesing. The Dux Medal, presented bv Miss Baillie, went to Ann Caagnou. Froxime Access'd: Bruce Hunter. Mrs. Caigou’s prize for the most oooular girl, awarded on the vote of the pupils of Std. IV., Form I and Form 11. was won by Ann Caigou. The Reynolds Cup awarded for the Rhodes Scholar of the school was won bv Les Champion. Prizes were presented to the following: Primer 4: Elilen Atkin. Std. 1: Margaret McHerron and Shirley Petherbridge, eoual 1. Std II: Margaret Harris. St. Ill: Joan Robinson and Phyllis Harney, equal 1. St. IV: Craig Tennant. Form I: Betty Ferguson. Mr. J. M. Robertson presided at the meeting of the Executive of the Buller District Patriotic Committee. The secretary reported that the total receipts from the various committees in the district from January 1 to December 13, 1943, for the 1943 appeal had amounted to £2,746 6s 4d. Details were: Westport £1,774 17s lid, Granitv £254 13s Id. Karamea £64 9s 3d. Millerton £74 5s 7d, Denniston and Burnett’s Face £6O 15s, Seregant’s Hill £257 4s, Mokihinui £l4l' 2s 6d, Stockton Mine £B9 4s, Charleston £lB 13s, Waimanvaroa £lO 2s, Birchfield £l. Total £2,746 6 S 4d. Accounts passed for payment. Grant to returned soldiers £4 4s lOd, sundry account 11s 9d. Several letters were received from the Nelson Provincial Council, in connection with the application from the Westport Returned Services’ Association, for financial assistance from patriotic fundq towards the cost of erection and furnishing the proposed new club rooms. It was the opinion of members that some assistance should be granted, and the secretary was instructed to recommend the Council to make the grant from its funds on the basis of £1 for £1 on subscriptions collected by the Association. The chairman was instructed to enquire from the local Air Force Relations Committee whether any of their expenses had been paid by their head office, and if not that the Nelson Council be again written to on the matter. Mrs. E. Roper, Burnett’s Face, offered to bring a party of children to Westport to give a concert in aid of patriotic funds. While appreciating the offer of Mrs. Roper’s assistance, it was decided to consider the matter again after the holidavs. It was also decided that Nelson Provincial Council be advised that it would not be convenient to arrange for the exhibtiion ot Captain Peter Mclntyre’s war paintings until after the Christmas and New Year holidays.
