Gnr. E. A. C. Holmes has returned from the Middle East and is expected to arrive here this week. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Holmes. Clifford Street. ! Gnr. J. Dudley, recently returned from the Pacific Islands, is spending a holidav with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. Dudley, Harper Street. Mr. C. Mountford, second son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Mountford, Main Road, has secured his Mine Deputy’s certificate at the Examinations recently held. . Mrs. L Kidd, Dominion Hotel, Is spending a holiday in the Christchurch district, and will return at the week-end. ;
The McClure family, Brodie Street, for very many years residents of this township, left by the express on Tuesday lor Christchurch, where they will in future reside. Miss E. Coyle, a student of the Teachers’ Training College, Christchurch, has arrived home to spend the vacation with her father, Mr. A. Coyle, Clifford Street. Miss J. Aylward, medical student, Otago University, has arrived to spend the recess with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Aylward. The following were successful in passing their examination in St. John First Aid: Medallion: Miss D. Schafer, Mrs S. Mason, and Mrs. E. M. James; First Year Certificates, Mrs. L. Kinsella and W. Day; Vouchers, C. Myers, J. Myers, W. Myers, D. Baigent, W. Burr (all of Ngahere) and E. Henderson (Blackball). Dr. Kent conducted the examination Mrs. J. Docherty of Oaro is spending a holiday in Blackball as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. G. Clark. Main Road. „ , ' . Mrs. N. Smith. Main Road, who was a visitor to Christchurch during the week-end, where she had an invitation to the Air Force ball, has returned. ■ Bast Tuesday, the higher classes from the Ngahere State School, under the charge of the Headmaster, Mr. Foukes, travelled to Blackball, to take part in school swimming competitions, Although the morning was dull the children were lucky in getting through their contests before the weather broke. The final meeting of the year, of the Hall and Welfare Committee was held on Monday evening. Mr. R. Duncan, who presided over a full attendance, referred to the death of two of the members, Messrs A. AdamIson (Kaikoura) and N. Clarke (Blackball) since the last meeting, and asked the members to stand in silence as a mark of respect to their memory. Mr. A. Bowkett, Main Road, was appointed representative to vote in local body elections. It was agreed to present a gold medal to the local school for excellence in scholarship, the usual holiday clean-up at the hall property was left in the secretary’s hands. It was agreed to petition the Government regarding ground rents charged Crown tenants, asking for a 'reduction. , Mr. Murray Fowler, Coalgate, _ls visiting his relations, Mi. and Mrs. R< Colquhoun, Hart Street. The recent rams have been welcome Fine weather had brought for most householders a problem'of water supplies. This must always be the p ase where people are dependent on tanks. Blackball residents are looking forward with confidence to hay ing a' reticulated supply of water installed after the warisoverwhen pipes etc, will be available. With U water supply, this would be one of the best residential mining townships on the coast.
