Salmon has sufficiently re- ; covered to be able, to leave the hos- ■ pital for his home. Messrs J. Comerford and W. McNamara of Westport were visitors to' Reefton to-day. Mrs. J. Hannah accompanied bv, her son left this morning for Wanga- ■ nut. ' : Residents of the Maruia district gathered last week to welcome home , private Fred Norris who enlisted • with the Second Echelon and was re- ■ cently discharged from a hospital after being invalided home. The, evening took the form °.f a social and dance and a presentation was also made to Private Norris, who gave an interesting account of his experiences in Greece and Crete. Mr. James Pendergast of Cronadun has been accepted for the Royal Navy and leaves immediately to com- , mence training. At a meeting of the Reefton Labour Party it was decided to co-operate with the other West Coast L.R.C.’s on the occasion of their picnic to be held on the Reefton racecourse on January 25th when Runanga, Greymouth, Brunner and Westport would travel by excursion trains for the event. ' The usual Reefton public I picnic has been cancelled to allow all Reeftonites to take part. It is understood the Brass Band will also be in attendance. The fresh in the Inangahua River last eivening was responsible for washing the bank away that has been built up by; the bulldozer at Rosstown. The river unfortunately has now gone back to its original course and threatens to do further damage to the road. At a sitting of the Warden’s Court at Reefton before Mr G. G. Chisholm, Warden, Terrace- Coal Mine Ltd., '(Mr. Morgan’}, application for a coal lease over 31 acres in Blk XIV, Reefton S.D. was objected to by Burnwell Coal Co. Ltd. (Mr. Patterson). The objector .called evidence with a view to showing that the grant of the application would block objector’s natural outlet for ventilating his mine. After hearing several witnesses and counsel for the parties the Warden recommnded the application for the Minister’s consent to, it being granted. Costs were allowed applicant against objector amounting to £7 16s. • A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held before Mr. G. G. Chisholm, S'.M. In a case Police v. John Ingles Braidwood for giving possession of a firearm and ammunition to a person without a permit, the Magistrate, gave his reserved decision, convicting and fining accused £1 with costs 10s. The defence was that the firearm in question was lent by defendant, a Homeguardsman to a Territorial on leave without pay, and so was a matter for the Army authorities and not within the jurisdiction of the Civil Courts. Prior to the School closing for holidays the parents ana friends attended a display of High School pupils’ cooking and woodwork and Primary Schools’ handiwork and other crafts. Both exhibitions were a credit to the scholars and their teachers. At the Black’s Point School the teachers and pupils entertained the residents of the township to a social afternoon. The samples of the children s work were exhibited and afteinoon tea wa’s dispensed by the pupils to the visitors.
