LIQUOR RACKET

AUSTRALIAN MINISTER DECLARES WAR.

(Rec. 11.20.) SYDNEY, Dec. 16. Black market liquor deals in New South Wales alone may be shown to exceed a quarter of a million pounds. The Federal Customs Minister. Senator Keene, said to-day that huge sums of money had changed hands, and that the weekly turnover of some hotels had jumped suddenly from a few hundred pounds to as many thousands. Not satisfied even with their exorbitant black market prices, he said, the racketeers had adulterated wines and spirits. Some of the liquor offered for sale was unfit for human consumption. The Minister said that black market squads were rounding up the racketeers in all of the States. He appealed to the publid to report every instance of over-charging.
