HOKITIKA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent], HOKITIKA, Dec. 14. The Gael will leave on Thursday for Okuru and Jackson Bay to bring th e men employed on public works to Hokitika, so that they may proceed to their homes for the holidays. In former years the men mostly came up by plane. Mr T. Stuart, who was a patient at the hospital for a few days, has recovered and returned to his home. Dr Corban of South Westland, .was a visitor on Monday. Mr J', Condon returned Mahatahi to-day. Messrs G. Rowley, County Chairman, and J. Donovan, of Okarito, were visitors to-day. Rain commenced this morning about 9 o’clock, lasting until after 1 p.m. It was very welcome as lack of water whs generally beginning to become inconvenient.
Mrs Neil occupied the chair at the meeting of the Women’s Institute. A talk was given by Miss E. Dale, on Thomas Bracken, the New Zealand poet, which proved most interesting. Piano solos were given by Mrs .Belcher. A burlesque “Poor Little Angeline,” and a charade entitled "Christmas Party,” were entertaining. Christmas carols were sung by the institute choir. A tableaux "Away in a Manger,” was very effective. Miss J. Warren sang the musical accompaniment. The sum of £1 13s 3d was handed in for soldiers’ parcels. Competition winners were: Best bloom, Mrs Howat 1, Mrs Parkhill 2;'Christmas article, Mrs Penman 1, Mrs Patterson 2. Santa Claus turned up amid merriment and distributed parcels to all present.
