BRUNNER NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. Mrs. N. Short and -Master J. Short have returned from an extended visit to the North Island. Miss M. O’Brien, Mr. K. O’Brien and Miss N. Smith are on Christmas vacation from Training College. Mrs. R. Leaker of Wallsend is a patient at the Grey River Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. G. Smith and Miss M. Smith have returned from a holiday visit to Hikurangi. Mrs. F. Loubere and family have left on a visit to Geraldine.

Under ideal conditions a very pleasant afternoon was spent by adults and children alike at the Dobson School Christmas tree and open-air concert which was held in the school grounds on Saturday afternoon. Numerous items, including very pretty country dances,' were given by the school children. The Brunner Brass Band, which served the dual purpose of providing interludes and escorting Santa Claus to the scene, was a delightful addition to the programme. Each child received sweets, ice cream, an orange, a gift from the Christmas tree, and refreshments.

The weekly Dobson dance which was held on Monday night for Scout camping funds was as usual a success. It was announced at tne dance that the concluding dance of the year, which is to be held next Monday, will be a long night dance, and also that supper will be served. The dances that have been held this year have greatly helped the funds of the Miss Russia Committee, the Returned Soldiers’ Reception Committee and the 80-y Scouts. Thanks is due to the ladies who have run these dances, especially Miss Watson and Mrs. Walker.

The recently-formed Brunner Cricket Club opened its season on Sunday when a friendly match, Married v. Single men, was played and resulted in a win for the former by 21 runs. In theii’ first innings the Married men scored 79 runs, the principal scorers being Malmanche 25, Williams 18, and Buckman 15. Bowling for the single men, Anderson took 4 wickets for 7; and Dando 2 for 23. The single men, in their first innings made only 33 (Anderson 15, McGuinness 8, and Thompson 7), the rest being all out for 3; due to some good bowling by Charteris and Upston and some very good work behind the wicket by W. McNeish. In theii- second innings the Married men added 37 (Upston 11.■ Malmanche 7, Williams 6'); while the single men, batting with more confidence, scored 63 (Dando 20, McGuinness 18, and Morgan 8). An excellent afternoon tea was served by the ladies; to whom a hearty vote of thanks was passed. A similar match will be played next Sunday.
