National Savings investments in the Westport district for the week ended December 11, 1943, were as follows: Westport £310; Denniston £3l; Granity and Millerton £99 2s; Karamea £3 10s; Total £443 12s. At the sitting of the Manpower Appeal Committee held last evening, Theatre Enterprises Ltd. appealed against the direction. of Ula Maude Hgnshaw to employment In a tobacco factory at Petone. His firm conducted the St. James and Victoria Theatres and the Theatre Royal, stated the manager, Mr. T. Broker. Miss Henshaw worked between the first twoi theatres. She worked 32 hours a week, about 15 hours in clerical work and 17 in ticket selling. Ot the 11 girls he employed, this was the only girl he had in whole-time work. It might be possible t 0 replace Miss Henshaw, but there was the risk that any other girl he employed would be directed elsewhere by the manpower authorities. Further, it was hard to secure a girl who would work at night. District Manpower Officer, Mr. Bryce, told the committee the position Miss Henshaw was intended for would bring her more pay than she was earning now. He could secure a ticket-seller for the theatres, but it would be more difficult to secure a clerk. The appeal was dismissed, the direction to take effect from January 10, 1944. In a case in which Raymond Harold Chandler appealed against refusal of permission to terminate his employment with Nelson Creek Sawmill Ltd., Rahui, there was no appearance of the appellant, though Mr. H. Lovell appeared for the Sawmilling Company tq oppose the appeal, and it was dismissed for lack of prosecution. Late yesterday afternoon, fire broke out in the gorse on a section at the bottom of Romilly Street.
