' [Our Own Correspondent]. .AVESTPORT, Dec. 13. The Gabriella sailed for New Plymouth on Saturday; and the Korowai for Wellington yesterday. The ; Kaimiro arrived from Greymouth to comolete loading for Auckland. Mr. George, representing the Internal Affairs Department (Egg and Butter Division), is visiting Westport. i Mrs. J. McLaughlin of Nelson, is visiting relations here.. Flight-Sergeant H. Prosser, A.T.C., is spending leave at Granity. W.A.A.F. C. McGrath has arrived home on leave. » The funeral of the late William Burt Brown, which was held yesterday afternoon at Orowaiti Cemetery, wag largely attended by relatives and friends and representatives of local bodies; also the Returned Services’ Association. The Rev. R. Simpson held a service at the residence at Granitv and the services at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. S. Gorney. The Granity Silver Band, under Mr. Coe, played “The Garland of Flowers” and “Abide With Me”. Messrs T. Longstaff, G. Rennie, W. Parlane (R.S.A.), L. Bassit, J. Pollock and A. Mann (Westport Coal Coy. staff), were pall-bearers. The firing party was under Staff-Sergeant R. Kerr and Mr. K. Smith sounded the “Last Post.” The weather was beautifully h ne and warm on Saturday when the Westport Methodist Church held its annual garden party at “The Pines?” The Mayor (Mr. J. M. Robertson) declared the party open and the Boys Band was in attendance. Stall-hold-erq were: Sweets, Miss H. Tregurtha; Needlework and Produce, Mrs. Ray and Mrs. H. Tregurtha; Cakes, Mrs. W. Taylor and Mrs. L. McDonald; Competitions, Mr. ’ H. Pickering; Afternoon tea was served on the lawn by members of the Ladies' Guild. The takings for the afternoon were very satisfactory, and the committee is to be congratulated on the success of its efforts. Yesterday’s rail-car brought a party of Reefton bowlers to play a return match with the R.S.A. The green was in fine order and the weather was perfect. After lunch, play started. with the issue in doubt in several rinks until the last head was played. R.S.A. won, thus evening their recent defeat at Reefton. During the afternoon the visitors were served with afternoon tea and at the conclusion of the games, Mr. C. Potter heartily thanked the R.S.A. and ladies for the most enjoyable time they had been given. He assured the R.S.A. that they would be back again and hoped also to have numerous visits to Reefton by the Westport bowlers. < At the final meeting for the year of the Board of Managers of the Westport Technical High School the financial statement showed that the Board’s position was very satisfactory and accounts amounting to £124 were passed for payment. The annual bal-ance-sheet of the No. 2 Account presented, showed a substantial credit, although £45 had been donated to the war funds. Board members inspected the plans for the learners’ swimming pool now being constructed at the North School, and adhered to the previous decision of contributing to the cost so that the pool could be used by the Technical pupils. Permission was granted the Methodist Young Women’s Bible Class to use the school for an Easter Camp under conditions to be drawn up by the Principal. The assistant area staff officer. Captain Wood, wrote thanking the school cadets for providing a firing party for the funeral of Sgt. T. L. Taylor, and complimented the boys on their bearing. It was decided to write to the head office of the Public Works Department with regard to renovating the interior- of the workshops and if prices were reasonable, 50 new chairs were to be purchased and some minor repairs made in the workshops. and they bitterly regretted they had brought no gun. Mr. Whitcombe seemed determined to cross this river which was a formidable task.
