ENEMY RAIDERS
OVER SOUTH OF ENGLAND.
CONVENT AND SCHOOL HIT.
LONDON, Dec. 10
Four raiders were destroyed on Friday night when German raiders were over Southern England, after a few scattered enemy aeroplanes had; crossed the south-east coast. A very small number penetrated to the London area, giving the metropolis its first alert since December 1. Spasmodic gunfire was heard in several London districts. . . High explosives and incendiaries were dropped on an East Anglian village, damaging cottages. A convent and. a high school received a direct hit in the Thames Estuary area and casualties are feared. One raider, which dropped flares, became the target for a concentrated barrage. Hundreds of watchers in one area saw a raider shot down. Bombs fell in the, vicinity but there were no casualties. The raiders, which were flying high over the coast, met what residents describe as the greatest barrage ever heard. 1
