GREY COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. Cr. W. Fisher presided over yesterday's monthly meeting of the Grey County Council. Also present were Crs. J. Ryan, J. Mulcare, T. G. Jamie, son, H. G. Carter, R. Clarke, J. Ryiiil, the County Clerk (Miss E. M. Heaphy) and the Engineer (Mr. J. Higgins). After hearing a report oy the County Clerk on her interview with the Greymouth Town Clerk regarding the Borough Council’s request that the Grey County should meet its share of fees payable for the use of the hospital morgue, the council approved of the payment of its share. Cr Carter raised the question of erosion which was taking place on the property of Mr. W. McLaughlen at Red Jacks. A stream had gone right through the centre of the best block he had, Cr. Carter said. It was decided that a deputation from the Council : hould meet the Minister of Works (Mr. Semple) and the member for the district (Hon. P. C. Webb) during their visit to the Coast, to support Mr. McLaughlen’s representations on the matter, ana the Engineer was asked to inspect the damage, if possible with a representative of the Public Works Department. The Inangahua County Council wrote advising that the Council would co-operate in requesting a' Government grant for road access to Mr. W. McVicar’s property in the Upper Grey Valley. . It was decided to ask the Engineer to 'get in touch with the Inangahua County* Council pointing out that the Grey County Council was willing to contribute £63 towards the cost of the work and asking if the Inanga hua County Council would supervise the work. . , „ The Westland County Clerk forwarded a copy of a paper prepared by direction of the Westland County Council for general information in connection with the advocacy for the extension of the South Westland railway from Ross to Wataroa. It was decided that the Christmas and New Year holidays of the Counc.il’s staff' should be from December 24 to January 6. Cr. Carter asked if anything couid be done about the road to the Kopara. He understood this was full of pot. holes, and that the surface was hard and the loose metal gone. The Engineer said that when he had gone over the road a few days before there was not a single pot-hole, though it was a bit bumpy. With the grader working on it on some wet days there would be a big improvement. He agreed that the road was hare but asked what could be done if there were no men available for work on it. He had had to have men on redecking the Kopara bridge. Cr. Jamieson said that as secretary, of the South Beach-Paroa Ratepayers’ Association he had approached the Commissioner of Crown Lands regarding a proposal to take a piece of land at South Beach for a children’s playground. The Commission er had said that the proposal met with his approval, but that it would • be necessary for the Qrey County to close part of a public road suggested as a recreation reserve, also for the permission of certain ratepayers to be obtained. The matter was referred io the Engineer with power to act. Mr, Higgins said that the reserve in question was on the sea front and he thought there was plenty of room. The Engineer asked about the possibility, of getting a 15 cwt. truck. This would enable materials to be got about and jobs to be done quickly. It was decided that the Engineer should make enquiries and that he be given power to act. Mr. R. C. Baker, Ngahere, wrote applying for a taxi i.river’s license. The County Clerk said that the police had no recomjnendation to make. x It was decided to grant the application on the recommendation of Cr. Mulcare. Mr. Max Robertson. Stoke. Nelson, wrote applying for a remission of half rates, amounting to £1 11s 6d, on his property at Twelve Mile (Coast Road) owing to the building having been unoccupied for the past 12 months.—Granted. It was decided to hold the next meeting of the Council on January 13. The Treasurer’s statement ' for the period ended November 3(1 said that receipts had amounted to £18,446 16s 7d. Details, with estimated receipts for the Vriar in parenthesis, were:— Rates, £2.156 5s (£10,187); vehicle licenses, £2.256 Is Ra ‘ ( '£3.6UU); sundry licenses, £403 2s (£400); royalties and rents. £lBl 4s 4f l (£275); sales and him. £lB7 Id (£300)’; compensation refunds, £Bl 11 s Od ( £15fl); main highways, £2.372 5s 10d (£6,055); Government, grants. £l,OOl 14s lid, (£3,552); hire account, £2.532 3s 3d, (£4.500); goldfields. £1.605 13s Id.
