U.S. RAID ON TOULON

HEAVY CASUALTIES. SEVERAL SHIPS HIT. LONDON, Nov. 25. According to the Vichy radio, the casualties in the Toulin raid by U.S. Fortress bombers numbered 160 killed and 300 injured, with a great number of dead not yet recovered from the debris. Considerable damage was done to the submarine base at Toulon by Fortresses. Hits were scored on repair shops and submarine pens, as well as the harbour, where ships were anchored. Oil fires were started at repair shops and other fires surmounted the clouds. Thick black smoke was seen followinv three heavy explosions in the arsenal area. It is reported that one ship hit in the harbour is believed to be a naval unit. An explosion was seen on another vessel. Three submarines and a merchantman in dry dock were probably hit. The raid apparently was a surprise and only a few fighters were sent up, none of which gave battle. > The south French targets included a viaduct on the Riviera, near Cannes. . . . > ■■ ■■
