TN our correspondence column of November 2 last, there appeared a letter, signed “Disgusted,” alleging, on the part of the Reefton Returned Services’ Association, maladministration .‘in carrying out ‘its objects and reflecting on the probity of individual members and officers for the publication of which we hereby express to the Association and all of its members our unqualified regret. The letter stated: “Some time ago it was reported that the Reefton Returned Services’ Association were short of funds, so the Women’s War Service Auxiliary held a ball, and handed over £23 odd, expecting it would be used to give the sick and wounded returning men a few extra comforts; but would you believe it —the money went towards .a champagne dinner! Some of the returned men of the Great War are able-bodied, earning up to £lO a week; yet thev gave themselves a treat, instead of the sick and wounded.” We wish hereby, unreservedly, to withdraw these imputations, having ascertained that the dinner described as a “champagne dinner” was devoid of champagne and that not one penny of the money raised by the Women’s War Service Auxiliary, or any moneys of the Association, was expended in providing such dinner. We accept the Association’s assurance that the cost of the dinnei’ was met by a lew upon members present and by donations, and that the Association has not reported to anyone that it was short of funds, and that , the W.W.S.A. donation was purely voluntary, and not inspired by the Association.
