RACING AND TROTTING

Canterbury J.C. ' TO-DAY’S PROSPECTS The Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring meeting will open to-day at Riccarton, when the principal races to be decided will be the N.Z. Cup run over two miles and the N.Z. Derby over one mile and . a-half. Perhaps an event of no less importance is the Stewards’ Handicap, generally looked upon as the premier sprint race of the year. Representative is the likely favourite in the N.Z. Cup. He has come through a solid preparation, his track work being a feature of the pre-race trials at headquarters. Gladynev and Rakanui both have credentials, and these two, with Battledress, who has come into favour since his convincing win in the Levin Handicap last week, look the most likely of the others. Tara King is sure of support in the Derby. He is bred, the right way and looks every .inch a Derby colt. On recent form, Expanse would appear to be his most serious ■ rival. Betting is likely to take a fairly wide range in the Stewards, but a trio who should be well backed .are Lord Advocate. Royal Flight and Tutere. The track will be fast. Under the win and place system of betting the following horses may be fancied:— J 12.2: Middleton Handicap: Invincible. Tavern Light. Gay Thread. 12.42: Spring Nursery: Piccolo.
