Pilot Officer James Tyson, Dunollie has received his commission in the R.N.A.F. Mr. W. D. C'uneen, the well-known Ashburton auctioneer, is at present on a holiday, visit to the West Coast. The Governor-General, Sir C. Newall, attended by Major C. J. Holland Martin, left Wellington tor Auckland on Saturday afternoon. —-P.A. President Roosevelt, owing to illness, has cancelled all appointments, he having contracted a slight cold, with aches through the body. The resignation of Mrs. J. R. Gosling from the stall of the Hokitika District High School was accepted at a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board on Friday. Hon. J. O’Brien and Mrs. O’Brien, accompanied by Mr. O’Brien’s private secretary, Miss C. Moore, arrived in Greymouth on Saturday and will be present at the Labour Ball to-night. Admiral Sir John Cunningham has been appointed Comma’nder-in-Chief of the Mediterranean, in succession to Sir Andrew Cunningham, the First Sea Lord. He is a cousin of Sir Andrew. At a meeting of the Wellington Education Board tributes were paid to the memory of Mr. Donald McCaskill, who died recently and a motion of condolence with the widow and family wes passed. Speakers referred to Mr. McCaskill’s service to education; particularly as the Board’s senior inspector and later as a Board member. “He was a man of very kindly disposition, well liked by the teachers, by his fellow-inspectors, and perhaps the greatest test of all, by the children,” said Mr. Dyer.

A unique feature of the most recent, degrees by the University of JNew Zealand was that two of the degrees were conferred upon prisoners of war. J. f-1. Hall, M.A. U.L.8., journalist, and subsequently public relations officer of the Second N.Z.E.F., completed his course byj taking his two final subjects while in a prison camp in Germany. The papers were forwarded from New Zealand. L. D. Lee B. Com. had completed the bulk of his work before leaving the Dominion, but was granted on receipt of his application, a war concession -pass jp nis final subject. Tne diplomas are meantime being lodged witn the next-of-kin, but the University is also informing the two graduates by air mail.
