BRITAIN ASKS RUSSIA
The British Minister for Fuel, Major Lloyd George, son of last war’s Prime Minister, has asked Soviet scientists for information on the underground gasification of coal in mines. Underground gasification, increasingly practised by Soviet miners, allows the heating values of coal to be extracted without miners going below to bring the coal to the surca.e After the war, Soviet coal mines will be gradually staffed by surface engineers and office staffs; the perils and hardships of underground mining will belong to the past. —Common Cause.
