(Rec. 12.41 V NEW YORK, Oct. 21. The Tokio official radio stated that six United States Liberator bombers attacked the Gilbert Islands, yesterday. Japanese troops on the YunnanBurma front have made a thrust both north and south along the west bank of the Salween River. These artillery duels from bank to bank, ana fighting also at close- quarters is proceeding. - ~ A A Chinese communique said: A Japanese column, which previously had been reported to have been routed from a position opposite Lulu, on the east bank of the Salween River, has divided itself into two forces, one going to the north and the other to the south. The northern column is held bv Chinese forces south of Lusui, while the southern column has advanced to Lichaipah. RUGBY. Oct. 20.
An R.A.F. New Delhi communique says; Beaulighters yesterday continued attacks on locomotives and roiling stock in Burma, uestroying engines and waggons. Other planes dive-bombed Japanese army buildings on the Kaladan and Chindwin Rivers. Wellingtons last nigffi. bombed the airfield ai Magwe, starting large fires and also the town of Akyab, where bursts were seen on the northern part of the target area. All the R.A.F. planes returned.
