BASIC WAGE

TO FALL IN AUSTRALIA SYDNEY, October. 19

Nearly half a million workers in Australia are expected to lose a shilling a week as a result of a drop in the basic wage, commencing in November. Tlie average new basic wage rate for the six Australian capital cities will be £4 17s. This is the first basic wage drop in Australia since September, 1939. In Sydney the basic wage had risen steadily from £3 18s in July, 1937, to £5 last J'uly. The new Sydney rate is £4 19s which is the highest of all the Austialian cities.
