BOMBED NORTH-WEST OF NEW GUINEA.

'(Rec. BJS) SYDNEY, Oct 19. To-day General MacArthur reported the first Allied air attack on ari important Japanese shipping base, Ternate, in the Halmahera' Island group, north-west of Dutch New Guinea. This is the chief port tor inter-island shipping between the Philippines an'd 'the Netherland East Indies and New Guinea. Liberators made a round trip of two-thousand miles to fulfil the mission. The pilots reported having left the area in flames with considerable destruction in the town proper.
