FURLOUGH MEN

QUESTION OF RETURN TO SERVICE.

WELLINGTON, October 19.

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Wellington Returned Services’ Association adopted unanimously the following resolution:— “This Executive Committee of the R.S.A. realises at once that the exigencies of the military situation may demand that the present furlough men be returned to active service, and that the decision in that regard must, in the final event, rest with the Government, in consultation with General Freyberg. It does, however, make the strongest possible representation .that the present is an opportune time to thoroughly review the manpower situation, and to comb out ranks of thrty-five thousand fit ‘A’ men now retained in so-called essential industries.” . .

It was originally anticipated, stated the Minister of Defence. Hon. F. Jones, this evening, that members of the furlough draft would not have the opportunity of availing themselves’ of their free railway tickets beyond October 14. It was now. 1 evident. however, that those members who are returning overseas will not be required to leave New Zealand for some little time, and in the case of such members, the travel privileges will, therefore, be extended. Medical examinations and appeals are now proceeding, and as soon as it is decided that a man is fit and otherwise eligible for returning overseas, the appropriate area officer will extend the currency of his free railway ticket to cover the period that Will elapse up to the time that he is required to report to camp. Mr Jones said that it has been reported some members of the draft have been unable to return to their homes owing to the expiry of their rail" pass. Any men so situated will, on application to the nearest Army Office, be furnished with a free railway warrant to their home town,
