ROSS NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.]

The President. Mrs. Peebles, presided over a good attendance of members on Friday evening last at the monthly meeting of the Womens’ Institute. A new member, Mrs. . M. Ewan, was welcomed, also a visitor, Miss D. Smith. The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute song and Mrs. Ablesen reading the aspirations. An interesting letter received from Mr. J. Houlahan (overseas) was read bv the secretary. 'A letter was received from Mr. D. J. Evans thanking the Institute for the parcel for Ihe Greeks and Cretans. During the evening Mrs. Peebles made a presentation to Mrs. Adamson, mother of Thelma Adamson, aged 11 years, and to Mrs. J. Cummings, aunt of Gwen Phillips, aged 12 years, for a great effort w T hich these two girls have made for the soldiers’ knitting. Thelma has knitted 21 scarves, 18 pairs of mittens, and 5 balaclavas. Gwen has knitted 13 pairs of mittens, 7 balaclavas, G pullovers, 1 pair of men’s socks and 10 starves. The Ross women have knitted. since the outbreak of war 5,220 skeins of wool. A competition for the largest number of skeins of wool knitted in six months was won by Mrs. R. Jones, with Mrs. Mitchell second. The following knitted articles were handed in for October: —Two pairs of Navy mittens, a Navy scarf, an Air Force scarf, 2 khaki scarves, and six balaclavas. The members have packed and dispatched 25 Xmas parcels for overseas. New Zealand parcels will be packed and dispatched at a later date. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Collins, A. Thompsen and R. Jones. Com* petitions resulted as follows: Best flour bag article, Mrs. May (child s apron); best floral button-hole, Head; best bloom, Mrs. Goad. r lhe Easter egg was won by Mr. R. Pal ’k® r (Ross), and a knitted jumper by Mr. Nightingale (Greymouth). With the wandering shilling, Miss M. Jones made a puff pastry rhubarb pie, which netted ss. The pie was won by : Mrs. R. Wheeler. The roll call netted 21s. Mrs. and Miss McKey were the hostesses for the evening.
