JAP FORCES. CLEANED UP ON SMALL ISLANDS. (Rec. 10.40.) SYDNEY. Sept 23. United States ground forces in the Solomons have destroyed the remaining Japanese forces on the, north shores of Arundel Island, between Kolombangara and New Georgia Islands. Enemv troons on a nearby island, Sakakarasa, have also been monoed up. Allied light naval craft on night patrol, off Vella Lavella Island, shot down an attacking enemy flloatplane

Jananese artillery on Kolomhaimara Island has heavilv shelled lhe American nositions on Arundel Island causing light casualties. Allied positions on Guadalcanar island han been again raided bv tne Jananese air force. Six nlanes made bombing and strafing attacks. They caused minor damage.
During recent onerations the transport cargo shin “John Penn.” after landing passengers and cargo at forward destinations, was bombed and sunk b” the enemv while returning to Guadalcanar Island.
