I [Our Own Correspondent.] , HOKITIKA, Sept. 22. The Mayor, Mr Elcock, has been ■ advised by" Hon. James O’Brien, that Mr Mark’ Wallace has declined to accept, appointment to the local Rehabilitation Committee because it would be difficult for him to attend lhe meetings. It will therefore be necessary for the Farmers’ Union to recommend someone else for appointment. ( At a meeting of lhe School Committee it was decided to ask the children to make a fourth effort to raise funds for soldiers’ parcels. In previous years a general average of Is per pupil had been raised, approximately 10s being required tor each parcel. The appeal will close on October 15. . It was decided to I donate £5 towards the appeal. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the teachers, parents and .pupils for raising £BO at the school fair. The Rector reported the primary roll stood at 304, and the secondary at 49. Miss P. Callaghan is acting as > supernumerary teacher. At a meeting of the Returned Services’ Association the president, Mr F. J. Perham and Mr H. Kortegast reported on visits to ex-service-men in hospital. Appreciation was expressed of Mr R. J. Cowan’s donation of £l. A letter of condolence was sent, to the family of the late I Mr E. J. Lloyd. It was decided to [ request to have a representative on : the Westland Patriotic Board. It was resolved to have four headstones erected on graves of ex-servicemen. The issue of two badges was approved. Accounts totalling £52 were passed for payment.
