INIQUITOUS TAXATION

LABOUR’S DOUBLE-CROSS. Wage earners in New Zealand are forced to pay half a crown in every pound as wages tax. A man who signs a pay-sheet for, say, eight pounds per week, therefore receives only seven pounds, and thus loses one pound in taxation. When he is assessed for income tax, moreover, he finds that it is based on the full eight pounds, and that he has to pay income tax also on the pound that he never handled. This is a flagrant injustice, and is well described by the National candidate for Westland, Mr Frank Chivers, as the most iniquitous form of taxation ever imposed and perpetuated on the working class of the country. The Labour Government is responsible for this “double-cross.” The National Party, if elected, will remove this injustice, Another unjust imposition made upon the people by the Labour Government is the tax levied under the l heading of war risk, rhe scheme was first mooted at a time when a Japanese invasion was not an impossibility. The insurance companies told the Government that a charge of 2/- in the pound would meet all requirements, but the financial wizard (?), Mr. Nash, promptly imposed a rate of 5/- in the pound. The result is that the Government now holds £2,500,000 of the Peoples money, and the people are still being forced to pay this excessive demand. Throw out the double-crossing Labour Government on Saturday. Vote for the National Party, and ensure fair taxation. —*
