KUMARA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) Passengers by this week’s expresses to Christchurch included Mesdames H. Hamer, W. J. let, Miss Dulcie May, Messrs R. N. May. H. Parker, H. Sinclair and J. Sinclair. . , f ,. Mr L. Rickson is an inmate ot the Greymouth Hospital. Passengers from Christchurch were Mrs W. Stewart, Misses Mae, Margaret and Betty Stewart and Mrs W McConnon, of Wellington. Mrs A. Fensom presided over the monthly meeting of the Kumara Women’s Institute held on Wednesday evening. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Birss, Fahey Wise and Miss Steel. A golden thread talk on distilling sea water for drinking was handed in bv Mrs Caithness and read by Mrs Rieedv A brief and interesting talk on the life of the honey bee was given by Mr H. Hamer. September 22 was selected as the date for the celebration of the birthday party and invitations will be sent to tne various institutes. A report on the recent conference held in Christchurch was given by the delegate (Mrs Fensom). It was decided to send for a book on soft-toy making for the next meeting. Balaclavas were handed in by members for the patriotic committee. A song by Mrs McNabb was well received. Competitions resulted: Coffee sponge, Mrs Lakin 1, Miss A. Hamer 2 Mrs Fensom 3; best'bloom, Miss A. Hamer 1 Mrs A. Fensom 2, Mrs Reedy 3. Supper was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Lakin and McNabb. The meeting closed with the singing of God Defend New Zealand.
