lOur Own Correspondent.j Mr. A. Battershall, who was injured in the Stockton mine a few weeks ago, returned home on Friday. ■ Mr. H. Briggs of Hector, received a kick from a horse in the mine on Saturday morning, necessitating the attention of Dr. J. Simpson. After examination, the right leg was found to be bruised but no bones were broken.

Mrs. H. L. Evans was a visitor to Westport during the week-end, and attended a function organised by the Society for Closer Relations with the U.S.S.R. held in the Elite Tea Rooms on Saturday evening, on the occasion of the second anniversary 7 of the attack on Russia. Miss G. Harris) is spending a holiday in Christchurch Miss B. Spillane left on return to Christchurch on Monday after spending a fortnight’s holiday with Mr. & Mrs. A. Harris. A send off to Driver W. Morgan of the N.Z.A.S.C. was held in the hall on Thursday evening. Mr. J. Whisker presented Driver Morgan with . a wristlet watch from the public of Stockton. In addition, an envelope with some notes was handed to the recipient. Mrs. Boswell of Millerton presided' at the piano and a very enjoyable evening was spent by those in attendance. , , Constable and Mrs. A. Chippendale returned to Christchurch on Friday after spending a holiday With Mrs. Chippendale’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Harris. , , Mrs. H. Lavery and family of Westport, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. C. Steele. Mr. and Mrs. C. Steele and Mrs. K. Morgan were visitors to Denniston on Sunday. Mrs D. Kellv of Blackball, was a visitor to Stockton during the week. Miss N. Potter of Blackball paid a visit to the township during the week.

Stockton senior and junior soccer teams visited Denniston on Sunday. The senior 1 ' game resulted in a draw, neither side being able to score. The junior team was defeated by six goals to two. . <T . At the Ngakawau, Miners’ Union monthly meeting on Sunday .it was decided, owing to the arrival of a Bren gun carrier and the Westport Boys’ Band, to adjourn the meeting and invite the Westport visitors to address those present on the need for giving all the support possible for the Liberty Loan. Messrs J. M. Robertson, and, R. Betts, spoke on the need for making the loan a success, and were ably supported by the Chief Postmaster of Westport and Captain Parkes. After a demonstration of the Bren gun . carrier and the cash box attended to, the visitors ' were farewelled and the meeting resumed. Mr. F. Connew gave a report of the last meeting of the Buller Miners’ Central Committee. The report was received and the following questions dealt with: Re a letter from the Minister of Mines to the Central Committee for support for the Plunket Society, it was agreed, to give two shillings per member, which will mean that approximately twenty to twenty six pounds will be forwarded to the local centre at Granity. The selection of a representative to fill the position, vacated by Mr. H. L. Evans was decided. Messrs Ireland, Tyler and Johnson being the nominees. The voting resulted as follows: F. Ireland 17; I Tyler 10; S. Johnson 7. The chairman .declared Mr. Ireland elected. Nominations were taken for officials of the National Council of the United Mine Workers. Mr J. Devlin was the only nominee for President, Mr. A. McLagan for. secretary, and Mr. D. McRae for Australian delegate. A lengthy discussion took place on the question of filling positions on the loco staff. Regarding the curtailment of the number of locomotives on back shift, it was decided to approach th e manager and thoroughly discuss the position with him re the output and other matters, and that the manager’s attention be drawn to the state of the road to the. powder magazine, travelling on which Mr. J. Dowey suffered a fracture of the wrist, and had to receive attention at Buller Hospital.
