Allied troops use of captured arms, twenty-seven thousand rifles. DISCOVERIES IN TUNISIANS LONDON, June 23H Examination of German equipme captured in Tunisia revealed secrets of most types of enemy armament, of which the most interesting is the discovery that the 56-ton Mark 6 tank can travel under water, says the “Express’s” Algiers correspondent; It is equipped with special air locks and submarine devices, enabling it to ford the deepest streams by crossing on the beds. The Allies are still digging equipment and ammunition from hiding places around the battlefields. The discoveries indicate that the Germans were using much antiquated equipment, such .as French artillery pieces manufactured in 1918. These old guns were serviceable for certain jobs, and therefore it is not assumable they were used because of shortage. The Germans also used French guns captured in 1940 and rebarrelled in German factories.
The tremendous .amount of equipment captured is indicated by. the fact that 400 tons of samples alone’ were sent to America and a similar' amount to Britain for examination by experts. In North Africa it is concluded 'that the Germans mostly employed 'the best armament in Tunisia, but the Allies’ air and sea, blockade seriously depleted the; dumps, particularly in the BizerU- ! Ferryville areas, Other discoveries included an arm-, oured car with a .five centimetrj gun.
