High tides: Port of Westport: • a.m. p.m. Tuesday, June 29. 08.05 08.02 ' WESTPORT, June 28. Miss Treloar arrived from Wellington. by plane on Saturday. Mrs. J. Doyle, arrived by rail-car on Saturday on a visit to Westport. Rev. Father Kirby left for Wellington this morning. Miss Templeton who has been visiting friends 'here, left on return to Dunedin on Saturday morning. Mrs. T. Weekes who has been visiting Auckland, arrived home mt Saturday. Hon. W. H. Mclntyre arrived from Wellington on Saturday. Rev. Kenneth A. Robinson, of Granity, has been appointed as an honorary Child Welfare Officer for the purposes of the Child Welfare Act for the period ending December 31 1943. Holland Mcßride who was injured on the football field at Granity yesterday. and admitted to the Buller
Hospital, ivas found to have a sprained' ankle. His condition last evening
was quite satisfactory. A party! of 50 Buffalo Lodge members ftom! Greymouth and Blackball came to Westport by rail car on Saturday and! proceeded to Denniston, returning by Sunday’s rail car. On Satujdav the Chief Postmaster, Mr. Sissoni, received a cheque for £lOOO from] Hon. P, C. Webb, for investment iii the Liberty Loan. On Satuitiay, the chairman of the Patriotic Committee, Mr. J. M. Robertson, accompanied by Captain Parkes, Mr Sissons, Chief Postmaster. and members of his staff, and the Westport Bdys’ Band, under Mr. K. Smith, visited Denniston on a patriotic rally, with a Bren gun carrier, and despite the fact that it was back Saturday with the miners at work, did good business for the Third Liberty Loan, enrolling a number of members in 'the National Savings and receiving; an assurance from the president and] members of Denniston Miners’ Union that the union would invest £5OO in (the loan. Later m the day the Chief! Postmaster received a cheoue for £lOOO from the Hon. . P. C. Webb to similarly invest. This was very heartening to the committee and those associated with them in the rally and is. expected to stimulate others to make investments and thus realise Buller’s quota of £150,000. On Sunday other county districts were visited. At Millerton a small gathering-j was addressed one man investing] and bonds were sold and the party were asked to return to Millerton, on .Friday night ,to attend a functioil there, and an investment from the Miners’ Medical Association was promised. The Hon. Mr. Mclntyre subscribed £2OO. At Stockton a meeting in progress was adjourned and thfe delegation was invited to address! those present and one man broughtifiLOO worth of bonds •and it was statedhnat over £2OOO was subscribed by Stobltton Miners’ Union for the of bonds. At Ngakawau one n]dn invested £5OO and bonds were sQld and an investment from the MJedical Association was promised. The Boys’ Band and the Bren gun carrier accompanied the party and created great interest. The local goup savings fund ut Gibbs’ Transport and Motors, Ltd., at a meeting held last week, from a staff df 18 contributors, secured investments amounting to £265. In addition all staff members agreed to increase their weekly'investments to amounts ranging from 5s to £l. The firms are investing £5OO bach.
