And then there’s that bugbear, wash-day, looming on the horizon. A good word for the weed! A famous London medical specialist (according to a recent cable) has just declared that tobacco is “a very useful sedative. It rests the brain and prevents the human machine from overworking.” The same eminent authority .approves of smoking for women. He says it is the best fashion introduced for them, “because it steadies the nerves.” Every smoker know's that. But much depends on the quality of the tobacco. Brands full of nicotine won’t “rest the nerves,” and may affect the heart. And unfortunately, most of the imported tobaccos contain an excess of nicotine, in which respect they differ essentially from the brands produced by the National Tobacco Co., Ltd. (the pioneers of the tobacco industry in New Zealand), which, being comparatively free from nicotine, may be smoked all day long and no harm done. These tobaccos owe their delightful fragrance and delicious aroma largely to the fact that they are toasted. No other tobaccos are. Ask for Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold (mild), Navy Cut or Pocket Edition, or Cut Plug No. 10 (full strength). —Advt.

Judgment on a claim brought by Thomas Budd, a miner, of Millerton, against the Westport Coal Company, Ltd., has been given in the Compensation Court by Mr. Justice O’Kegan. Plaintiff, who is now 49, was injured in an accident at the defendants’ Millerton mine on December 22, 1941, and his weekly earnings were high enough to entitle him to the maximum compensation during total disablement, but for about four months, when he resumed work in the mine, he earned a reduced wage. The ■ Compensation Court was asked to determine the amount which plaintiff was entitled to, receive in nnal settlement. In a written judgment, Mr. Justice O’Regan reviewed medical evidence concerning plaintiffs injuries, and that he had gathered the impression at the hearing of the case at Westport, tnat plaintiff “was unduly afraid of himself. His Honour said he considered plaintiff would be well paid if he were allowed 10 per cent, of full compensation for the remainder of 'the period of liability. In the circumstances the total period of liability was 313 weeks, of which 77 had expired. The plaintiff was therefore entitled to 236 weekly payments of 9s, commuted, making a lump sum of, £94 19s sd. Judgment would be entered accordingly. His Honour allowed £8 8s costs and £2 2s for one medical witness.
