U.S. AIR RAIDS. RUGBY, June 20. A United States Navy communique states: Liberators, on Friday night started large fires at Kahili in the Buin area, and Mitchells attacked Ballale Island in the Shortland area. Six Japanese barges were strafed south of Vella Lavella island. One Mitchell bombed the runwav at Kolobamgara Island and the same night, patrol bombers, and Liberators attacked Jap positions at Nauru Island, starting large oil tires, and causing considerable damage in the dispersal area, and to living quarters. Enemy Solomons Bases RAIDED FROM GUADALCANARMORE HEAVY FIGHTING EXPECTED, (Special to O Press Assn) (Rec. 10.40.) SYDNEY, June 21. The South Pacific war correspondent’s reoort states,that Japanese an concentrations in the Northern Solomons sector are being subjected t attacks by Admiral Halsey’s bombers. Recently raids have been made on the Kahili aerodrome, on Bougainville Island. Kahili is the near est Japanese bomber base to Guadalcanal’ Island since Munda and Kolombangara have been neutralised by repeated attacks. Kahili is thiee hundred miles from Guadalcanal' Islaother raids by Admiral Halsey’s bombers have been made on Ballale, a Japanese fighter ’plane base on Shortland Island, which is 270 miles from Guadalcanal’ Island. American observers anticipate that heavy air fighting in this area will continue. Thev believe that the Japanese can no longer, afford to ignore growing Allied offensive air strength 1 in the South Pacific and South-west Pacific. .
