USE OF STEEL IN N.Z.
CONTROLLER APPOINTED. PARLIAMENT BLDGS, June 16. Following the visit of the AngloAmerican Steel Mission, comprising Sir John Duncanson, Iron and steel Controller of Great Britain, .and Mr E. A. Emerson, representative of tne War Production Board, it had become apparent that the appointment of a steel controller would be necessary said the Minister of Supply (Hon. D. G. Sullivan), in a statement to-night. , . , He said that controls exercised over the use of steel in New Zealand had been of such a nature that certain prohibitions had been made operative. The desire of the mission was that schemes of control be operated in all the British Dominions similar to those in force in Britain and America. To effect such control, it had become apparent that it would be necessary to appoint a Steel Controller, and Mr Sullivan announced that Mr R. D. Picot. Commissioner of Supply, had been appointed to that post. The necessary regulations for the introduction of a control scheme were now being considered, said the Minister, and he added that he was sure that everybody would realise the importance of New Zealand coming into line with • Britain and America in a control scheme.
