U.S. NAVAL PLANS
FOR SOUTH PACIFIC ATTACK.
WASHINGTON, Jun e 9. Colonel Knox, speaking at graduating class at the Naval Academy said. “The United States Fleet is preparing for new action in the South Pacific, On that front one of the strongest American fleets ever assembled keeps watch and prepares for fresh activity,” He added: ‘ The Allies are making gratifying progress in the Battle of the Atlantic, though that vital sea contest is by no means won.” Colonel Knox said there was a lot of irresponsible talk about a second front. There were already eight fronts: Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean, Atlantic, South Atlantic, South Pacific, North Pacific, Russo-German and Chinese. _ ... At a brief meeting of the Pacific Council. Mr. Roosevelt reported on th e operations at Attu, and also gave an estimate of the continuing attrition of the Japanese merchant shipping. Lord Halifax later described the estimate as “not bad.” He added that the meeting was devoted mostly to factual reports. There was notning startling.” / Tokio official radio stated:—Addressing a “Crush Britain and America” rally, the Speaker of the Japanese House’ of Representatives, Tadahiko Odada, asserted there was no room for the existence of Britain, America and Japan. Pie' added; “We must destroy Britain and America which are cruelty and craftiness incarnate. A global war does not permit a half-baked distinction between victor and vanquished,” Adada concluded. “It is a question of the survival of the fittest—eat or be eaten.
