Likely to End Soon . JAP FORCES TRAPPED.' (Rec. 1.4.) NEW YORK. Mav 20. The New York Times’s Washington correspondent says that unless the Japanese make a desperate move to relieve or evacuate their trapped forces on Attu Island, military authorities in Washington believe that the Attu campaign will end comparatively quicklv. Tlie “Herald-Tribune’s” Washington correspondent considers it unlikely that the Japanese will risk sending surface ships to Attu, because of the ring of Allied warships standing outside its .approaches,.. ... Ruußx, May 18. Further American advances on Attu Island are announced by me United States Navy Department. A communique states that the forces working inland were in possession of a high ' ridge south-east of Holtz Bay and that United States troops from the Massacre Bay area were advancing northwards. ■ During the day the Massacre Bay force advanced up the Pass towards Holtz Bay, and advanced- patrols from the two forces joined. During the afternoon the Pass was cleared ot enemy troops.
