Owles has received word that her brother, Mr. Jack Peters, has been promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Mew Zealand Air Force. He- is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Peters, formerly of Westport. Miss Norma Metson, Dunedin, is spending the term holidays with her parents in Westport. Mrs. W. Wehner, Christchurch, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. SutherMr. and Mrs. E. Tredennick left t>y: Saturday’s rail-car on return to Otira. , „ Master Leslie Atkinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Atkinson of Westport, was successful in gaining first place in the pianoforte solo (12 years and under 14) at- the Christchurch Competitions. Leslie is a pupil of the local Convent. Mr. J. Metson returned from Wellington on Saturday evening. Mr. J. Robertson, chairman of the Buller District Patriotic Committee, acknowledges the sum of £1 for soldiers’ overseas parcels, from Mr. Sid Reid, Lyell. Mr. J. Ward, chairman ot the Buller County Council, is to go to Wellington on Tuesday morning and will be making representations on var’ous matters of interest in the district. Some of the matters being dealt with are the harbour, reading access to timber areas, mining development, and rehabilitation. Mr. Ward has the good will and best wishes of the people of the district, who will loot; forward with interest to his report when he returns. , The Westport Coal Company s Millerton mine worked all last week, out the company’s Denniston mines were idle through lack of shipping. Results of basketball matches played last Saturday are as follows:--First Section: Tech O.G. A 16, Rangers A 9; Kawatiri A 24, Denniston OG. 6. Second Sec!ion: Tech O.G. B 19. Hospital 8; Waimangaroa' 13, Tiki 8.
