LONDON, May 16. An aircraft was destroyed off the south-west coast of England yesterday afternoon. Bombs were dropped in two districts in. East Anglia before dark. There was some damage. A few enemy aircraft flew over the north-west coast of England after midnight, and dropped bombs in several places. There were casualties and damage. ; A German communique claims that strong Luftwaffe forces last, night dropped high explosives and incendiaries on the shipyard centre at. Sunderland, causing considerable damage particularly to shipyards Three planes did not return.
London Attitude FOUR ENEMY PLANES SHOT DOWN.
(Rec. 11.20) LONDON, May 17. London was raided by* German fighter-bombers, flying at great height and then swooping and dropping bombs in several districts. There were some fatalaties. The first London alert was sounded shortly beiore midnight, and the second after midnight. The second one lasted ,a considerable period, during which susstained gunfire was heard. Damage in one district included a block ol liaffis shattered, and several houses end a private hotel damaged. During the first alert a loud explosion was heard over a widespread area. It was not the usual sounT, of an exploding bomb or gunfire. Inquiries failed to establish the cause. Some casualties were caused by high explosives. . .. Rescue workers tunnelling m the wreckage of three houses in one London district found the body of a' child, while nearoy there was a battered birdcage, containing a canary, which was still alive. At least four raiders were shot down.
