AUCKLAND DROUGHT BROKEN. p.A. AUCKLAND, May 16. Unexpected rain from late on Saturday night until midday to-day has given a welcome measure of relief from the threatened rationing of water from standpipes. The fall exceeded two inches at the Nihotapu dam and half an inch at the Waitakere dam. THREE MEN SENTENCED. P.A. WANGANUI, May 17. Supreme Court sentences were:— William Albert Rusden, 30, former Sergeant-Major, Area Army Office Wanganui, 18 months’- reformative detention. William Gordon Weir, labourer, 20, three years’ Borstal detention, for breaking, entering .and theft, and conversion of a motor-car. Ernest Stoneham Simpson, 20, probation, forging cheque. FIRE AT NIGHTCAPS. P.A. INVERCARGILL, May 17. About three o’clock this morning, the Nightcaps Hotel was completely destroyed by fire, believed to have originated in the kitchen. The fire had a good hold before the occupants awoke. They had only time to get out in night attire. Fortunately, the weather was calm, and the residents of the township were able 'to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby garage and two shops, though the windows were broken by the heat. The hotel was a two-storeved wooden structure of twenty rooms, builty 65 years ago. The licensee, Frank Ward, his wife and family and two boarders on the premises, lost all personal property. Ward recently returned from camp.
