HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, April 5. At a meeting of the Harbour Board there were present Messrs M. H. Houston (chair), H. Harvey and I. Freitas. Apologies were received for Messrs H. G. Park and P. H. Renton. The signalman reported that the channel was in fair condition, and the north wall had not shown any further weakening. It was resolved to charge a rental for use of one office with halt cost oi lighting, and to retain the use of one office. The Chairman said the Government desired to know the position of the smaller boards relative to centralisation of shipping, the position would have to be watched. The Explosives Department advised in regard to stacking of empty drums, the Secretary t 0 advise shipping company and oil agents. Copies ot emergency regulations were received. Accounts totalling £374 12s lid were passed for payment. Receipts amounted to £135 Os 4d. Over sixty residents visited Westport on Sunday travelling by rail-car. A large crowd welcomed them at the station and speeches were made by Messrs J. M. Robertson (Mayor of Westport), A. R. Elcock (Mayor of Hokitika) and T. P. O’Neil (Westland County Chairman). The party visited the Town Hall, and after lunch were conducted on a sightseeing tour of the aerodrome, Carter’s Beach, the Harbour, O’Conor Home, Hospital!, Schools, and Domain, and Bowling Green, where they were the guests of the Bowling Club at afternoon tea. Seen off by a very large crowd, the party left on the return at 4 p.m. Mr. Elcock expressed thanks for the kindness extended by the people of Westport, and trusted that in the near future Westport people would come to Hokitika, and give its people an opportunitv of repaying the many courtesies extended. Mr. O’Neil also expressed thanks, and extended, an invitation to visit the Westland district. The Mayor of Westport land Mayoress, (Mrs. Robertson), Chairman of the Hospital Board, Chairman ot the County (Mr. Wqrd), Messrs R. Betts, and Howard, and representatives of the Buller L.R.C. conducted the visitors on their tour.
