KUMARA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) Mr. W. J. McNabb, secretary of the Kumara Fire Brigade, is at present in. Wellington as a delegate to the annual Fire Brigades’ Conference. He is accompanied by Mrs. McNabb. Mr. William Louden of Dillmanstown, who was taken suddenly ill, is at present a patient, in the Westport. Hospital. Mrs. D. Hanna- is a patient in the Westland Hospital. Mr. W. Lawrence of Church street suffered a crushed foot while at work at Parker Bros’ mill at Blackwater and 1 is a patient in the Westland Hospital, Miss M. Bell has returned from a brief holiday visit to Christchurch. Mr. Frank Richardson is is a holiday visit to Dunedin. The State School Committee met on Wednesday evening. Present were Messrs John Reedy (chairman), F. Rudkin, B. Becker. R. Chant, and H. Hamer (hon. secretary); also the Headmaster, Mr. L. J. Thwaites, who reported a roll number of 70 and an average attendance of 63. Visitors to the school during the month were Nurse Stewart (school nurse) and Messrs Saunders and McCutcheon, also Nurse Berry in connection with matters affecting the Dental Clinic. The Internal Marketing Department had again commenced the supply of apples for the children. The Board wrote confirming the appointment of Miss Rollo as assistant mistress. The chairman reported having made enquiries for the old concrete blocks at the site of the old dairy factory for use in the construction of the proposed swimming' bath and also regarding the site selected for the bath. There -were five applications for the position of caretaker at the school and Mrs. V. Clark was appointed. In reply to a question, the secretary stated that he had had no reply from the Public Works Department as to whether they had any shovels, grubbers, or picks which the committee could purchase. The chairman referred to the death of Mr. Ridley, late Agricultural Instructor, and a motion of condolence with his relatives was carried in silence. The Headmaster stated that of late the attendance had been much more satisfactory and members expressed pleasure that the co-operation of parents in this manner was manifest. Accounts amounting to £2 19s 6d were passed for payment. At the monthly meeting of the Kumara Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. A. B. Spiers) presided over Crs. J. Murphy, F. Wise, W. Lawrence, R. N. May, and G. Hunt. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. B. Becker, A. J. S. Fensom, amd W. J. McNabb. Accounts amounting to £134 18s lOd were passed for payment. Mr. W. Stewart waited on the Council regarding a recent charge made for us e of part of Second street and produced written permission to fence given by an early Council. Alter lengthy discussion it was decided to leave the matter over Until iiext meeting. Tenders are to be invited for the lease of all vacant land in th e Borough .Endowment Reserve. A map of the reserve was received from the Lands Department. It was resolved that application be made ' to have the strip of land taken by the Crown for a proposed railway again made part of the Kumara Borough Endowment. A letter was received from the Social Security Department stating that if the State School was agreeable these would be no objection to the plan to place their Scheme 13 workmen at the Convent School grounds for a approved period It was decided to write to Father Healy explaining the position. The report of the chairman of the Public Works Committee was received and Councillors asked to inspect the work on Sunday. It was decided a special meeting on April 8 be held to consider tenders and outstanding rates.
