■Private H. J. Wicks is spending leave at his home in Greymouth. Miss F. Howell, Karoro, accompanied by Mrs G. Whyte will leave this morning on a holiday visit to Dunedin. Mr A. T. Donnelly of Christchurch, who visited Greymouth for a sitting of. the Special Tribunal yesterday, left later for Nelson. Mrs E. S. Hoddinott returned yesterday after spending a holiday in the North Island. She was accompanied by hei’ mother, Mrs W. A. Moffatt, of, Palmerston North. The Sir George Grey Scholarship in science at Canterbury University College has been awarded to Miss R. P. Mauger, in default of J. H. Warcup who has resigned the scholarship. Rev- F. G. Reddell, who will leave for Wellington this week was met at a farewell gathering by the Greymouth Ministers’ Association. Rev. P. Kirkham, on behalf of the Association, made a presentation of a book. Mr. F. S. Dyson, District Engineer of the Public Works Department at Auckland, has been given approval to retire as from April 20. Mr. Dyson has been with the Department for 43 years, and has given notable service to many districts in which he has served. —P.A. Private C. Neville was met yesterday afternoon by the Stewards of the Greymouth Trotting Club at the office of Mr P. C. Heaphy, President of the Club. Mr Heaphy presented Private Neville with a fountain pen and extended to him the best wishes of the Club. Private Neville briefly replied. The following are at the Albion Hotel: Mr. and Mrs. Dawber, Mr. and Mrs. W-. S. Valentine, Messrs James Jack, R. Lovatt, W. Hinton, W. Bramwell and W. Woods (Christchurch), Lieut. J. E. Pavitt, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards (Nelson), Messrs T. R. Dennison (Ashburton), R. Bennett (Kaiapoi), and P. Morant (Weheka). The death occurred at Greymouth, last evening of Mi's. Barbara Drake, wife of Mr. John Drake, after a lengthy illness. She was 70 years of age. Deceased was born in Waikouaiti Otago. She came to Greymouth 40 years ago and lived here till the time of her death. Besides her husband she leaves one daughter, Mrs. J. Bruerton (Greymouth) and two. sisters, Mrs. E. Black and Miss J • Muir (Karitane). Captain H. O. Jefcoate has resigned from the staff of the Christchurch Boys’ High School because of the effect of injuries received on active service in the Middle East. Accepting the resignation on Monday, the Canterbury University College Council paid a tribute to his service of more than 20 years, especially mentioning his success as a games coach.
