RUNANGA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.] The Runanga Co-operative Womes’s Guild held their annual meeting in the Druids’ Hall recently, Mrs Oakley presiding. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs Oakley; Vice-President, Mrs Wright; Secretary, Mrs Patterson; Treasurer, Mrs Airns; Committee, Mesdames Hinks, Worgan, Smeaton, Lee and Robertson.

Mrs Lord is at present an inmate of the Grey ’River Hospital. Mrs S. Eyeington and her daughter, June, returned yesterday after a visit to Inangahua Junction. Mrs T. Gillaly has returned home after a holiday visit to Auckland. At the annual meeting of the Runanga Debating Club, presided over by Mr R. Bowman, the following officers were elected: President, Mr W. Williams; Vice-President, Mr J. Richmond; Secretary, Mr W. Patterson; Committee, the above-men-tioned officers and Messrs J. Unwin and R. McTaggart; Club Leader, Mr W. Wick; Auditor, Mr J. Unwin. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance. The retiring president said that the past season had been the most successful in the Club’s history. Membership had reached 20, and attendances had been good. Messrs S. Braithwaite and J. Martin were the holders qf the cups. The Club had taken part in two inter-club debates, and a public function and several social gatherings had been held. Two debates were arranged for the beginning of the season next week. A. series of discussion groups dealing with world problems are also to be introduced on trial.

At a social recently, Mr J. Martin, a member of the Debating Club, who is leaving the district, was presented with a book by the Leader (Mr W. Wick).' Several members spoke appreciatively of Mr Martin’s work for the Club. A Home Guard school of instruction under the command of Second Lieutenant Leighs will be held at Runanga next week. Instruction on infantry weapons will be given each evening.
