REEFTON NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent,] REEFTON, March 23. Mrs. Strachan has entered the hospital for treatment. Miss Shepherd is visiting Mrs. Blns at Temuka. , Lance Corporal A. Clever, and Nurse Cleaver of Westland Hospital, are spending leave with their parents. Mr. L. Mashlan, who has been employed by the State Forest Department at Tawhai for a number of years, ihas left for Christchurch where he will in future reside. O n Sunday at the Bowling Green a progressive pairs competition was played, when E. Cleaver took the prize for skip, S. Newcombe being second. The prize for heads was won by A. McElwee, with A. Milne runner up Seven rinks were played. There was a fair attendance at the Citerion Theatre on Sunday evening when Mr. W. Wood of the Auckland Communist Party delivered an address on ‘‘A Programme For Victory.” Mr. A. Turner was chairman and welcomed the speaker to Reefton. mentioning that this was the first occasion on which a member of the Communist Party had spoken in the town. He was given an attentive hearing and at th P conclusion several questions were answered. Yesterday the contractor Mr. Alan Wells, commenced the erection of the new Cronadun Post Office, which will be an elaborate building when completed. The present office has been in use since 1899. The annual meeting of the Reefton Fire Brigade was held last night. Superintendent Coxall presided pver 12 members. The report stated that 48 practices were held during the year, the brigade attending seven fires. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £ll6 5s 10d. Members commented on the sound financial position l of the brigade. The election of officers resulted: Superintendent, C Coxall; Deputy Superintendent, W. Blom; Ist Foreman, J. Eager; 2nd Foreman, W. McCaffry; Ladder Foreman, R. Chandler S Griegs; Secretary, V. Newcombe; Treasurer, C. Coxall; Auditor, J. Banks; Motormen, V. Newcombe and C, Newcombe. It was resolved that the brigade carry out the 70th anniversary. celebrations in February 1944 and that a number of entertainments be run to raise funds. The first meeting of the brigade was 'held on February 3rd, 1874, when C. Mirfin was appointed Captain and J. Steele Secretary. It was resolved to increase the secretary’s salary to £7 10s. The Superintendent was appointed delegate to attend the conference at Wellington. On Sunday, at St. Stephen’s Church Harvest Festival services were conducted by the Vicar, Rev. V. L. Learning. Special hymns were sung. The Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb) visited Reefton yesterday and was met by members of the Inangahua County Council.
