Though m mditterent health for some time, his death came unexpectedly. His relatives will have the sympathy of many friends in their sudden bereavement. The Minister of Mines, Hon. P C. Kemp, stenographer Miss Crabbe, also Mr. J Hadcrbft (Assistant Superintendaht of State Mines) paid a visit to the district on February 19, when he spent some time at Blackball, meeting the Union representatives, and d’scussing various matters of importance regarding the working of the colliery. Later the party journeyed to Paparoa and met the mine manager and Union representatives there, when a' lengthy discussion took place on the coal outlook and Hoa coal in particular. The question of production and disposal of this particular class of coal was discussed from all angles and on leaving, the Minister promised that either he or the Under-Secretary of Mines would return in ten days or so, to continue discussions on the above matters. They left for Greymouth in the late afternoon. While in Blackball they were the guests of Mrs. H. J. Campbell, Domimon Hotel.
