Fantastic rents are being paid for houses and flats in Townsville, northern Queensland, where local papers have published advertisements. by officers offering as high as fifty guineas monthly for well appointed homes. Before the war, houses' commanding such sums were available at rents up to eight pounds monthly. At Cairns, further, north a heavy influx of the wives and families of servicemen stationed in the area necessitated the issue of a Government order to all persons not permantly stationed at Cairns to leave town.
