Mrs. W. Baker and daughter Ann will leave to-day for Auckland. Mr C F. Jackson, of Runanga, has commenced duty! with the Railways Department at Greymouth. Private C. R. Newton who has been spending leave with his, mother, Mrs W. Dutton, Runanga, has returned to camp. Guests at Revington’s Hotel include: Messrs A. L. Power, W. B. Walker, Mrs G. Colombus, Mrs J. R. Colombus, Miss M. Colombus (Christchurch), Lieut. K. B. and Mrs Cavanagh (Wellington), Mr W. S. Butcher (Wellington). Mr. A. G. Osborne, M.P., for Onehunga, has been sworn in a's a Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Prime Minister. It is understood, says the “Evening Post.” that Mr. Osborne is to devote a good deal of his time to defence matters, under the direction of the Prime Minister. The death occurred at Greymouth yesterday of Andrew McKean, aged 74 years He had been ailing for tne past 2 months. Mr. McKean was born at Palmerston and, apart from the past 12 months when 1 he has lived at Taylorville with his daughter, he has lived at Palmerston all his life. His..wife died eleven years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Upston (Dobson)_, and Mrs. Beckman (Taylorville), five sons, Robert (Stillwater), William ' (Dobson), Andrew (Palmerston), John (Peebles), and Walter (Tokamaru). A sixth son, Alex, was killed in action. The funeral will take place at Palmerston on Monday. , The death occurred at the Westland Hospital yesterday,, oi a wellknown resident of Kanieri, Mr. George James Pfahlert, at me age of 74 years. He had been ill for about three weeks. Mr. Pfahlert was a native of Kanieri, and one of the nrst to be born there, his father and mother having in the early days conducted a hotel and bakery business, the latter of which is still carried on byl his brother, Charles. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Mitchell (Christchurch) and three other brothers. Joseph (Grey Valley). Andrew (Australia) and Ernest (Kanieri). He followed the gold mining industry for a a great many years in | the Kanieri district. In his earlier [ years he was a well-known member of the Kanieri Cricket Club mid of the First Westland Rifles. The funeral takes pla'ce to-morrow.
