Mr W J. Millner, mail supervisor at the Hokitika Post Ofhce has received notice of his transfer to the position of Postmaster at Murchison. He will take up his new duties in about a fortnight. Cabled advice has been received from Canada that L.A.C. Ronald H. R. Foster, R.N.Z.A.F.,. son of Mr. H. V Foster, Collector of Customs at Greymouth, came second out of 140 in his Wings Examination and has received a commission as Flying Officer His relatives have received from Private Phil Pascoe, of Greymouth, a member of the New Zealand Divisional Artillery in the Eighth Army, a cablegram stating that he was well after the advance upon Tripolitania. Private Pascoe has been with the artillery throughout the desert campaign operating a 25 pounder gun. The funeral of Mrs. Mary Mallinson took place at Karoro Cemetery yesterday morning, followed by Requiem Mass at St. Patrick's Church. Rev. Father ' Long was celebrant and the children from St. Mary's Convent School formed the choir. In the Sanctuary were Rev. Fathers Finertiy (Hokitika), Lordun (Sumner), and O’Mahoney, (Ahaura). Rev. Father Long olliciated at the graveside, assisted by Rev. Fathers Finerty (Hokitika), Joyce (Christchurch), Lordan (Sumner) Healy (Kumara), Browne (Ahaura’). Holohan (Runanga), Gregory (Greymouth), O’Mahoney (Ahaura) and Kelane (Hokitika). Pall-bearers from the house to the church were Messrs W. Ford, L. Wilson H Rattray, G. Anderson, M. McDonald, and C. Russell, and from the church. Messrs J. Devaney!, J. Kent, F. W. Baillie, C. Russell, W. McLean and H. Carter.

Mr. Frank Crossley Mappin, of “Birchlands,” Mountain Road, Auckland, has succeeded his father, Sir Samuel Wilson Mappin, who died recently at the age of 88 years. Sir Frederick Thorpe Mappin, M.P., grandfather of the present holder of the title was created a baronet in 1886 The’ fourth baronet, Sir Charles Thomas Hewitt Mappin, joined the Royal Air Force and was killed in 1941. Sir Frank Mappin was born in Lincolnshire, ancUs the next baronet. He came to New Zealand 34 years ago and farmed at Silverdale. Twenty-two years ago he took up his residence in Auckland. In 1909 he married Miss Ruby, Thomson, daughter of Mr. George L. Thomson, of Auckland. There are three daughters, Laura, (doing war work in England since the outbreak), Mrs. Theo de Lang, and Ethel (a St. John Ambulance V.A.D. in Auckland).
