BUIN BOMBED
Ammunition Dump Exploded JAPANESE SHIP SUNK. (Special to N.Z. Press Assn.) (Rec. 10.45) SYDNEY, Feb. 9. On Monday Catalina flying boats made theii’ third attack in five nights on the important Japanese base ot Buin, at the northern end of Bougainville Island, in the Northern Solomons. As showing the reach of the Allied aix- raids, Buin is about twelvehundred miles east of Dobo, which also was raided on Monday. These raids on Buin have been made in support of the American Fleet, which is now operating in the area’ of Buin. The Kahili aerodrome was, the target for the latest attack. T lying boats stayed over their objective xor more than two hours. Violent explosions are reported. One of these, apparently, was an ammunition dump. It rocked a' Catalina flying at a height of more than nine thousand feet. Several large enemy aircraft, probably heavvy bombers, were set on fire. Searchlight emplacements and buildings were demolished. A two thousand ton ship off the shore, was hit, she burned and was completely destroyed, following a direct hit. FURTHER RAIDS. (Rhe. 11.10.) SYDNEY, Feb.' 9. General MacArthur’s communique to-day reports the bombing of an enemy aerodrome at Gasmata in New Britain. At Dabo, Dutch New Guinea, on McCleur Gulf, west of Kaukenau, a Liberator bombed the jetty area.
