Goods railed eastwards through the Otira tunnel in the week ended last Saturday totalled' 16,221 tons. The figure for the corresponding week of 1942 was 13.927 tons, and for 1941 it was 13,093 tons.

A delay to a goods train, caused by a mechanical defect in the points svstem at Wallsend, held up the railcar from Christchurch at Brunner yesterday morning. It reached Greymouth 40 minutes late, and was 25 minutes late in its departure for Hokitika.

Bus arrangements for as many as 150 passengers each trip from Kumara Junction Railway Station, to the racecourse have been made for the Kumara Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday next, following representations to the Transport Department. The single pool system of betting will •operate at the meeting, the first rae'e at which, starts at 12.15 p.m. There are suitable train arrangements from all parts of the West Coast. An influx of visitors is expected from Christchurch. Acceptances for the meeting will close this evening at 5 o’clock.

Representations regarding the proposed restriction of deliveries by greengrocers and fruiterers were made by a deputation which met the Hon. J. O’Brien (Minister of Transport), in Greymouth yesterday morning. Mr O’Brien gave an assurance that the tradesmen concerned would not be put off the road, but emphasised the urgency of conserving supplies and the need of absolute cooperation to this end by both the businessmen and the public. Remarking that the interview was verv satisfactory, Mr J. Rothwell said later that if orders were given early in the morning a large area could be covered in one delivery.
