HARIHARI NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent) , The weather for the past few weeks has been most unfavourable, and very heavy rain on Friday brought down a big flood in the Big Wanganui River, with the result that work on the bridge had to be aband- ' oned for the day. The punt was , also unworkable at the week-end. It j was expected to have it operating , again by Monday afternoon, the busy period in lamb transport has | begun, a considerable number hav-. ing been last week punted over the I Big Wanganui. _ i The County roads in this district are in a very bad state at the present time, especially Robertson-Had-dock road, and the road at the lower La Fontaine end of the flat. This is due to the resident roadman being engaged half his time in keeping the road leading up to the punt in order after each flood. If the County Council intend to allow thenroadman to keep the Big Wanganui River bed road in order until the bridge is restored, it is about time the Council sent another lorry from Hokitika to cope with the extra work i involved. I may state the Council is ■ very keen to collect the heavy trai- I fic fees from the various lorries i which are running on the roads, but | for the past four months the roads i have been simply left in a neglected | state. , i While employed on the Big Wanganui bridge last week, two men, , Messrs C. Armstrong and P. Ross, were injured when a wire rope snap-1 ped and caught the men, who were working close by. Their injuries w-ere not serious, and they will resume work in a fortnight. Messrs J. Nolan and S. Kirby paid a brief visit to Okarito during the week. . ’ , , Mr Jim Nolan of Wataroa, is taking over the management of Duart farm. Mr Pipson, the former manager, will be leaving the district in the coming week. Rev. Father J. Maguire will next Sunday visit this part of his parish at 11 a.m. . . Mrs Duncan of Cape Foulwind, is at present spending a holiday in Harihari. Mrs E. Baxter and her daughter Margaret, of Otira, have been paying a holiday visit to Waiho and Okarito. Mrs Griffiths of Auckland is visiting Harihari and is the guest of her sister, Mrs F. G. Minehan. _ Mrs Wallace Keen of Hokitika is on a visit to Mrs J. Adamson. Miss Edna Barnes of Runanga, is 1 on a visit to the township, being the ' guest of Mrs P. V. Kirby. I Mrs E. A. Kirby has left on a hoi- | day visit to Auckland. Mr M. Patrick was a visitor to Hokitika during the past week. Miss M. Minehan of Christchurch, has returned home after spending a short holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Minehan. ; A euchre and dance were held here on Wednesday night. The winners of the euchre prizes were Mrs L. Robertson and Mr M. Searle. The dance was very enjoyable, quite a number of residents being present. Music was supplied by Mr G. Todd on- the piano, and Mr G. Searle on the piano accordeon. The men engaged on the reconstruction of the Big Wanganui 1 bridge, with the approval of the District Engineer, will on Friday evening next hold a dance here in aid of the Red Cross Society.
