Recently it has been necessary to work the’ railway goods-sned up til 11 p.m. in order to release wagons, and it was stated yesterday that tne prompt removal of goods from the sheds would greatly relieve the congestion there and reduce the risk ot goods being interfered with.

A collision occurred late yesterday afternoon between a truck belonging to the .firm of M. McDonnell, which was proceeding from High Street into Cowper Street, and a' car driven by Dr. Kent, which was turning from Cowper Street on to tne hospital bridge. The side of the car was driven in .about nine inches, the left mudguard badly dented and the windows and windscreen were damaged. The front of the radiator of the truck was pushed in. and the radiator punctured. A headlight was also damaged. In the National Savings quota results for the week ended January 23. following the resumption of national savings activities after the holidays, 67 towns attained their national savings quotas., Six provincial .centres were successful, namely: Gisborne. Invercargill, Napier, New Plymouth, Wanganui and Westport. In point of numbers, pride of place for the week was held by the Canterbury district, with twelve successes, and the second place by Taranaki, with nine successes, the latter, however, being the highest on a percentage basis. Nine places still record an unbroken series of successes since the inception of the quota scheme in October, 1941. These are New Plymouth, Ashburton, Hawera, Kaikoura, Hunterville. Hawarden, Cheviot, Urenui and Weber,.
