INDIA’S FOOD SHORTAGE
GOVERNMENT ALLEGES HOARDING.
8.0.W. RUGBY, Jan. 24. A communique dealing with the food situation in India was issued at New Delhi to-dav by the Government of India. It says that th e Government is aware that wheat has been in particularly short suoply. while prices of other grains have risen considerably. The Government believes these shortages are due less to the loss of Burma and other war conditions than to hoarding by producers, dealers and consumers alike, and there is little danger of the people of India having to undergo ?ny serious reduction of their normal requirements if these sumflies can be equitably distributed. The Government, therefore, is able to announce that substantial shipments of wheat will be reaching India in the next few months and will be allocated under Government orders to the deficit areas, where Government agencies will supervise distribution at reasonable prices to ultimate consumers. Steps are being taken to prevent further hoarding.
