MEASURES TAKEN IN MARSEILLES

(Rec. 11.15) LONDON, Jan. 24. The Vichy radio stated that French and German police carried out the evacuation of 40,000 inhabitants from the old port of Marseilles on “military and' security” grounds. The French police also purged Marseilles town, took 6000 into custody, and closed a thousand cafes and bars. The Prefect of Marseilles said that those taken into custody had gravely menaced the security of the city; and exposed the populat'on to danger. The evacuees from the old port will be permanently settled >n the Rhone area. The Berlin radio said that the Vichy Government had decreed penalties, including death, for public transport sabotage.
